Top Ten Books I Would Want To Be Made Into Movies

02 June 2015

Okay I LOVE this TTT! I'm super excited for this list but I got to tell you it was hard to come up with. It has to be a book that you love so much you need a show, or a movie, and the book series itself. Like there has to be a strong level of devotion for this to work. So without further ado here is my top ten!

10. The List by Siobhan Vivian. I think this book is such great social commentary. I love everything about this book and I think it's a message that should transcend books and movies. We can judge people as much as we want, but our opinions are baseless unless we know them, which we almost never do. I think that this book as a movie would be a great emotional movie and I would totally watch it.

9. Crash and Burn by Michael Hassan. So this guy, Crash, stopped Burn from bombing the school and so he's all famous and wrote a book. Crash talked about a movie about him coming out. I thought it would be so cool to see that come true. Like actually have a movie about him just like he said in the books you know?

8. Cinder by Marissa Meyer. (Review Here). I would love to see the world that this author created on the big screen. I want to see how cyborgs work, how it all works. I have my imagination and that's enough but it would be cool to see my minds picture projected onto a screen. I feel like its just such a cool retelling with an amazing world.

7. Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Sumna. This books is so creepy and good and crazy and dark and twisty, I LOVE IT! half of me wants this to be a movie so I can have more people to talk to about that twist. It's a crazy a story filled with mystery and it would make a killer thriller.

6. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowel. THIS BOOK IS JUST SO GOOD I CAN'T EVEN DEAL. It's just one of those stories you just love. I love the characters and I honestly think Cath and I would make awesome friends. I even wrote a Harry Potter Fanfic once! lol I think this is a story that should be shared and I love reading it but having it as a movie would just add another way for me to revisit this story.

5. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. I love this series so much and it would be awesome to see all the action sequences played out, as well as the actual places up on a screen. It's such an amazing story and it would be great to see it played out. Plus I love the characters.

4. Graceling by Kristin Cashore. This would be an action-y, crazy, movie. Kasta is such a kickass, strong, women who can fight her own battles and is smart. She is awesome and I would love to see a movie or show where the main character is a badass woman who is capable, strong, and isn't some damsel in distress. Yes there is romance, and I ship her and Po hardcore, but it's not all there is to this book. There's so much more. Plus Po accepts Kasta and her cold, detached, badass nature, which helps me ship them even harder lol. I would love to see Fire, and Bitterblue as films too obviously but if I talked about all of them It would take up so much space. If you have not read this series, finish this post then run to the closest library or bookstore and get this series. It is amazing!

3. The Body Finder by Kimberly Derting. I think this would make a better T.V show than a movie but I still love the idea of seeing this on the big screen. A story about a girl who can find dead bodies, and tries to catch a serial killer, all while trying to figure out her own life and feelings for her best friend.I think this would be super cool. Like a crime show but with a paranormal twist.

2. The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan. This series is amazing! Creepy and incing all at once. Like I'm pretty sure I would die if I was in this book, but I love reading about the characters and their lives. It's a story about zombies (unconsecrated) and a broken society. It follows first one group then their kids. It's super interesting and crazy. The romance is on point, it's not the most important thing, but it does play a role.

1. The Mara Dyer Trilogy by Michelle Hodkins. I mean come on. This series is amazing!!! It's got mystery, a cool/creepy factor, romance, paranormal stuff, and awesome, badass characters. Mara is such a great person and I just love her so much and I wish I could give her a hug, actually I wish I could give everyone in this book a hug, well the good guys anyway. I have to say Noah Shaw *swoon* is my favorite. He is just so badass but kind, tough but sweet. You just gotta love him.

Guest Post: Top Five Book To Movie Adpatations

20 February 2015

Alrighty! Happy Friday guys! We survived the week! I think we all deserve a little pat on the back for that! So today I thought I would host a guest post! Today I Have Sami Lien, who is super awesome and cool! Go check Out her website and follow her on social media! Enjoy :)

Hi everyone! I’m so glad to be here today! Big thanks to Giselle for hosting me today. I’ve had the chance to work with her over the years on virtual blog tours, and she always been so much fun to work with on promoting authors. I was so excited when she asked me to do a guest post here at Perks of Being a Reader! First of all - let me tell you a little about me! My name is Sami Lien, and I own Roger Charlie, a publicity and management firm that specializes in services for authors, musicians and small businesses. I just love working with creative professionals to help make their brand successful, and love sharing their stories across through various media platforms and events! Books, music, movies and entertainment in general are a huge passion of mine, so I thought today, I’d write about my Top 5 Favorite YA Book-to-Movie Adaptations, and hope you’ll chime in with comments on with your favorites, too! :)

Warm Bodies (Book: 2012; Movie: 2013)
I actually received a copy of the book at Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance Trade Show before it was even released, but didn’t realize it until after I saw (and loved) the movie. I think the book translates over nicely into film, and just love the perspective and play on the culture of (how I took it, anyway) the negative effects of technology today. I wasn’t sure about another zombie story, but this one is so clever and unique, I recommend it to everyone! Plus, for music lovers like me, you’ll adore the soundtrack. Totally killer!

Freaky Friday (Book: 1972; Movie: 1976)
I’m sticking with the 1976 version here, over the updated version with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, mostly because the latter movie is really based off of the first movie - not the book. I think the book shines in the inner monologue inside Annabel’s head, but the movie does a better job at actually bringing the characters to life. I also think the film did a really nice job developing the mom’s character, too, when she was more of a supporting role in the book.

 A Little Princess (Book: 1905; Movie: 1939,1995)
This film did a beautiful job of illustrating Sara’s imagination and bringing the story to life. I’m a sucker for a strong female lead - especially when they’re younger, so I think that’s a big part of the reason why this one resonates so strongly with me. I grew up on the Shirley Temple version, and while it’s somewhat different than the newer adaptation - I am a big fan of both.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (Book: 1973; Movie: 1997)
I actually had no idea this was a book, so I had to go back and read it afterward. Despite switching up the regular order of things, I still loved both - but found the movie much more thrilling. I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘What a strange choice to have on this list,” but I was in high school when this came out in the theatres, so it’s one that will always stick with me as a favorite, and is probably a huge reason as to why I love Pretty Little Liars so much now. :) Plus… Ryan Phillippe? YES PLEASE.

Nick and Norah and the Infinite Playlist (Book: 2007; Movie: 2008)
There’s actually very little of the book in the movie, but the story is consistent. The movie ending actually annoyed me - it seemed too easy, but it’s just a true testament of how much I enjoy a story that develops out of a completely random circumstance that creates a night full of adventure. I also love Kat Dennings and Ari Graynor, and of course, the fact that music almost plays another character in the film, as well.

Others that I haven’t yet seen, but are on my list:
The Lovely Bones
 I Am Number Four
 The Book Thief
The Fault in our Stars - I have to be in the right mood to be ready to cry!

What are some of yours? I’d love more recommendations! Feel free to leave a comment below, or connect with me directly!

My Musings:

First I want to say that this is the first book I've read from YA fiction where I am older than the main character. This is a first for me and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. Anyways, I have to say I was somewhat excited to read this book, but the cover and the summary intrigued me so I decided to give it a shot. I tend to shy away from these type of books because I feel like there is a tendency to make it too dramatic and not properly developed. That being said I was pleasantly surprised that I liked this book, but It did let me down in some aspects.

The writing style is very simple. There isn't a lot of description within the novel. Its very much a simplistic way of writing, but in a way I felt like it did serve the book because of how fast pace it was. However because of how fast pace it was, and how simplistic the writing was I felt like I couldn't really connect with the story or the characters which for me, is a pretty fatal flaw. As a result it took me  a while to even begin to get into the story and get involved. I will say that there were several well written moments, like when she goes and see's her dad, or when she first arrives at her new school.

I found the plot to be pretty straight forward but pretty unrealistic and dramatic. The whole point of the novel is for Edie to find her mom and be able to deal with what she finds out. In this aspect itself, it's pretty solid and I enjoyed it. But there were a couple moments that I felt were added just for the sake of adding drama. Like when Jermaine jumps into the water to save a little kid. It didn't really help the plot along. It just elevated the drama. Or how instead of going to the police Edie decides to go look for her mom on her own. Now, if my mom went missing you bet I would call the police. If I really needed to I would look for her myself too. But if you take out these drama filled moments and leave the essential plot, its actually not a bad story line. Aside from that, some moments I felt like the author had it spot on. There's a moment were the author tackles racism and I those moments that unveil that side of humanity were pretty good. I have to say the moments that had more of a real feel, and just fit better into the story line elevated the plot and the overall book.

I didn't really like the characters. That being said, its probably because I didn't really connect with them, and because at times I feel like there were unrealistic. Similar to the plot issues, the characters had moments that didn't seem to make sense. I definitely admire Edie. I think she's a strong character and she's pretty bad ass for the most part. I just had a hard time agreeing with her decisions. I had a hard time being able to empathize with her because I was frustrated with her the majority of the time.
Jermaine I liked. He ends up helping Edie, but the way he decided to help her seemed like a little bit of a stretch. Aside from my initial reservation, Jermaine really grew on me and I did end up liking him. I guess I should emend my earlier statement to I didn't really like the main character.

Overall it was a pretty decent read. It wasn't anything special, and personally the cheesy drama level was a little too high for me. But If you can get over the tiny stretches and the extra ommphness of it all then you should give it a shot!

Coffee for thins book: Some moments can get to be too much, both on the cheesy level and the emotional level. So I recommend a Vanilla Latte Espresso.

My Musings:

If i'm going to be totally honest today, I was dreading reading this book. No, not dreading, but I really wasn't looking forward to it. I thought it was going to be some cheesy romance novel with a couple of history moments here and there. I'm glad to say that this book proved me wrong. It's not the best book i've ever read, but it's actually pretty good.

Character wise, the author did an amazing job making the characters realistic and developed them in a way you could relate to.  I loved how kick-ass Sophie was. She's a good fighter, archer, horse rider, and yet she can also be the epitome of ladyness. The only thing that kind of caught me of guard was Peter's turn to the darkside, if you will. I thought that it was kind of unwarranted. Not really set into his character, you know. Like he's supposed to be this spoiled kid who doesn't know any better, and then he just looses it. I mean I know that the synopsis says he is sadistic but you don't really see it until the end of the book. I guess it made sense, but I wish there had been more development and not just a spontaneous twist. I loved Alexander and Sergei. They were pretty solid characters, nothing really too special about them.

I think the author did a pretty good job with the plot. At times it was a bit predictable and other times I was just sitting there with my jaw open, in shock. It was a  pretty good balance. This was more plot driven. Which I think is why the neglected developing Sergei and Alexander further, or making Sophie's relationship with Rina more evident. But I think those weaker aspects are okay because the plot was pretty strong. The path the book to end was perfect and well written. The ending definitely left me wanting to have the next book to read.

I usually just do a romance bit, but I feel like for this book I'm going to relationship type of paragraph thing. Okay, Ficklin, like I said before, put some aspects of the book on the back burner because the book was more plot driven. There are four fully developed relationships in the book. Sophie and the Queen, Sophie and Alexander, Sophie and Peter, and  Sophie and Sergei. Everyone else's relationships are established but you never really delve into the relationships. Like Sophie and Rina are best friends but I didn't feel like they were. I felt like that moved a bit fast and wasn't developed enough.

I liked the romance. Was I the only one who at the very beginning thought that she was going to fall for Sergei and not Alexander? I was biased to this thought for more than half the book. As a result I didn't really appreciate the relationship between Alexander and Sophie. I think at one point I though Alexander was messing around to get Sophie sent away. After I accepted my ship wasn't going to happen I definitely rooted for Alexander and Sophie. It wasn't insta-lovey, but there wasn't some great lead in to it. *sigh* They were a cute couple.

I'm not a fan of surprises but i'm glad this book surprised me. I'm glad that it exceeded my expectations and proved itself to be a good book. I recommend this book to those who like Historical Fiction or read those Dear America books as a kid.

Coffee For this Book: A nice warm Macchiato.

Blogtober: TBR Friday

10 October 2014

I usually hate making TBR lists because I like reading what I want when I want to. But for some reason I made myself a list of things to read. I'm actually really excited about my TBR pile. Usually i'm not because it makes reading, something I love, feel more like homework. But I have a lot of awesome books waiting for me and I can't wait to read them!

1. Queen Of Someday by Sherry D Ficklin I'm actually reading this already and I'm so in love with it. I love the characters and the way the stories set up. And the Romance is on point!!

2.  The 100 by Kass Morgan. I have to say, I love the CW show. I didn't even know this book existed so I have the show to thank! I wasn't sure about reading this book because of the show, but I figured that if I love the show, i'd love the book even more!

3. Melt by Selene Castrovilla. I've been loving all the storybook retellings. What caught my eye with this one was the twist and eerie feel. I'm excited to see where this story goes and how it's executed

4. Suspicion by Alexandra Monir. It's described as "A contemporary DOWNTON ABBEY that has a dash of the supernatural, a hot and heavy romance and a deadly family mystery.". How can I not read this?! It's perfect for me!

Well there's my TBR so far! It's pretty short. Short and sweet. Perfect for me. Enough of a list to give me some sense of organization but short enough that it doesn't feel like homework. So what are you guys planning on reading? What other books do you recommend for me? Have any TBR posts? link them in the comments.
